Danilovskiy district was named after the ancient village Danilovskoye, where, accourding to some sources, in the 13th century knyaz Daniil Moscovskiy founded one of the first monasteries in Moscow. The figure of the first knyaz of Moscow Daniil is pictured on the coat of arms of the Danilovskiy district. in celebration of 850th anniversary of Moscow a bronze full hight monument of the knyaz was installed in the public garden of Danilovskaya square.
